SaveABunny is a nonprofit, volunteer-oriented animal rescue organization based in Mill Valley, California. Formerly operating as the San Francisco/Marin chapter of the House Rabbit Society, SaveABunny left House Rabbit Society in 2006 to offer a “new generation” of rabbit rescue.
SaveABunny proudly integrates the urgency, passion and dedication of front line animal rescue work with the grounded professionalism and expertise of highly skilled volunteers--- many of whom are leaders in their businesses and communities.
SaveABunny works with area sheltersSaveABunny was founded in 1999 following the rescue of a neglected stray rabbit, and has grown into an award-winning no-kill shelter and foster center. We are recognized as a leader in rabbit rescue efforts, as well as a model for building effective partnerships with animal shelters and community groups, such as the Girl Scouts.
SaveABunny rescues and assists Northern California shelters to adopt more than 300 domestic rabbits per year. We are funded primarily through donations and grants, and secondarily through adoption fees and specialty services, such as boarding, rabbit grooming, and limited merchandise sales.
SaveABunny is an approved 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization. SaveABunny's EIN# is 80-0243372. We are volunteer-run and rely on financial donations. Your support is urgently needed and greatly appreciated.
What Is Our Mission and Philosophy?
We serve both the people and animals in the community through education, adoption, outreach, and rescue options. We believe that the humane and responsible treatment of animals reduces the number of unwanted and homeless animals and contributes to a more tolerant and compassionate society.
Scooter - Resident naughty bunny, and SaveABunny ambassador extraordinaire! We believe that all companion rabbits are worthy of a safe, loving home regardless of breed purity, pedigree, or temperament. We incorporate this valuable message of acceptance and open-mindedness into our educational and adoption outreach events, training of shelter staff, community in-service programs, and through pet-assisted therapy with at-risk youth and senior citizens.
We encourage people to adopt spayed or neutered rabbits from shelters and rescue groups, such as SaveABunny, rather than purchasing an animal from a breeder or pet store. All our rabbits are spayed or neutered, and undergo medical and temperament evaluation before being placed up for adoption. We carefully screen potential adopters and require that all rabbits from SaveABunny live indoors as a treasured member of the family. We provide free, ongoing support to adopters, and we make a lifetime commitment to the safety and well-being of the rabbit.
Our adoption contract outlines terms for the proper care of a rabbit and specifies that the rabbit be returned to SaveABunny if the terms of the adoption contract are violated, or if the adopter can no longer care for the rabbit.
According to the ASPCA, companion rabbits are the third most frequently euthanized animals at shelters, behind cats and dogs. While many shelter rabbits come from feed stores, flea markets, or laboratories, in reality, most rabbits facing euthanasia were once family companions or classroom pets who were bought at pet stores or breeders and surrendered to shelters when the novelty wore off or at the conclusion of a school year. Many people mistakenly assume that rabbits are low-maintenance or good starter pets for children, rather than physically fragile, yet spirited and opinionated animals who require specialized care and several hours of attention and exercise each day.
Phoenix - This brave & loving bunny was tortured and set on fire. He came to SaveABunny for treatment of his physical & emotional wounds. He is now healed and happy!SaveABunny is often the only resource for rabbits facing euthanasia at shelters. These rabbits include highly adoptable rabbits who have “run out of time,” those deemed “unadoptable” because they have health or behavioral issues, and special-needs rabbits requiring surgery or specialized medical attention resulting from trauma, neglect, or abuse. Once a rabbit enters SaveABunny, he or she will never “run out of time” and will always have a home as a foster until adopted.
Until fairly recently, most people mistakenly viewed rabbits as rodents or as livestock, rather than as highly intelligent and sensitive companion animals who can learn their names, be trained to use a litter box and deeply bond with people just like cats and dogs.
Historically, domestic rabbits were kept outdoors, in a hutch or cage, exposing them to the dangers of predators, pesticides, insects and inclement weather. The average lifespan for an outside hutch rabbit is 2-3 years compared to 7-10+ years for a spayed/neutered indoor companion rabbit. Furthermore, a life spent isolated or confined in a cage or hutch is boring, depressing and stressful for a social and loving creature such as a rabbit.
In the last few decades, increasing numbers of people have discovered the joys of living with a rabbit in the house, providing basic rabbit-proofing of electrical wires and such. Companion rabbits become a part of the family, just like the family cat or dog, and quietly add joy, playfulness and love.
Does SaveABunny Do Any Campaign Work?
Yes. SaveABunny opposes the production, sale or use of rabbit fur, rabbit skin and rabbit meat. Like all our work, these campaigns are run by volunteers.
We welcome reliable and compassionate volunteers who are at least 12 years old. We encourage a diverse, fun and supportive environment in which volunteers can apply their personal interests and skills to help rabbits. Volunteer opportunities accommodate a wide range of interests and skills including, but not limited to, on-site rabbit care and facility maintenance, artistic or graphic design, computer and technical assistance, public outreach, transportation of rabbits and supplies and grant-writing or fundraising. In-kind donations from individuals and businesses are also greatly appreciated to further our rescue work.
Donations can be made via PayPal from our website. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 2143, Mill Valley, CA 94942. Whatever an individual or organization’s interests or financial position may be, there are unique and meaningful ways to help save a bunny!
